England Project's 2nd Annual Boat Race Challenge

The annual Boat Race between the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Clubs dates back to their inaugural race at Henley-on-Thames on 10 June 1829, when a crowd of around 20,000 watched Oxford win.^[1] Last year, the England Project re-enacted the inaugural race, creating, sourcing and connected profiles for each of the 18 participants.

This year's competition is a re-run of the second boat race on 17 June 1836. It was the first of the University Boat Races to be held in London, on the Thames between Westminster and Putney.

For anyone new to this challenge, the goal is to set the record straight for your favourite team, whichever shade of blue you are, by completing your team's profiles first.

The Challenge

The eight oarsmen and cox for each team are listed below.

The challenge is to create a profile for each person and connect them to the single family tree. (See hints below)

How to Join

Choose your team - Cambridge or Oxford.

Place your name in the following format next to the rower or cox you will be working on: [[Smithy-15790|Nifty Smiffy]]

As soon as you have added your name, you can start working on the profile. If a profile doesn't already exist, the first step is to create one!

A maximum of 3 people can work on each rower -- so get your name down quickly.

What next?

Once you have connected your rower to the single family tree, your team can declare that rower complete by adding the following to the end of the line and saving: ~~~~🏁

Declaration of the Winning Team

The winning team will be the one that completes all of its profiles first or has the most profiles complete when the competition ends.

The competition will end at 3pm GMT Sunday 4th April.

All participants will be awarded an exclusive participation sticker to add to their own profile!

D. T. Davis. (likely Ebenezer William Davies - to be researched further) Wikitree Team : Frances McCarthy. The Story of the Inter-university Boat Race (1900) says he was "E. W. L. Davies, Jesus (cox.)": see Google Books. This suggests he was Edward William Lewis Davies, of Jesus College, awarded BA 1836, MA 1838.

Some Interesting facts

• The first Boat Race took place at Henley-on-Thames in 1829 but the second was in 1836 in London, where it has been held ever since. The first Women's Boat Race took place in 1927 and moved to the Championship Course in 2015.^[2]
• In 1912 the weather was so bad that both boats sunk and a rerun was ordered^[3]
• Many notable people have taken part in the race, for example Dan Snow the TV presenter, journalist and historian rowed for Oxford 1999-2001 whilst Hugh Laurie who many will know as the doctor in ’House’, rowed for Cambridge in 1980.
• This year's Boat Race will be held on the Great Ouse at Ely for the first time.

Hints

• Some of the profiles are already in Wikitree but they may need improving or connecting. Check carefully before you create a new profile

• You know you have a connection when you link to someone with a profile that has a message at the bottom of the screen saying something like...Albert is 28 degrees from Henry VIII of England on our single family tree

• Try to work as a team. Some people are good at connecting, some good at finding sources and so on. Many hands make light work!

• If you have finished, why not give other members of the team a helping hand.

• Most of the crew will be alumni of their respective teams. so try looking for them in Alumni Oxonienses or Alumni Cantabrigienses.
